Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) as described by Moz, is the “practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.”

The quality of traffic is important. Say your website is selling shoes and boots. If half of the web hits are from people looking to buy pharmaceutical items as they’ve searched for the brand Boots, that’s not quality traffic. Equally, if you’re a Derby-based business selling just to the UK, but you’re getting hits from America who search for sports-rivalries, you need to look at how you reference the term derby.

Once you have the right people clicking through to your website from search engine results pages (SERPs), then higher quantity traffic is better.

What is organic traffic?

Organic traffic is any traffic (web hits) that you haven’t paid for.

An example of paid for – or non-organic – traffic, is those from the ads that you see at the top of your Google search. They will have the word Ad in front of them, but otherwise just blend into the rest of the search results. Another example are those banner ads that you’ll see on certain websites.

So to summarise, if someone searches for “shoes and boots in Derby”, clicks on your website and it’s not a paid for ad, that’s an example of organic traffic.

The data is weighted by the algorithm, and the more “ticks” your content has, the more likely it will appear on Google (or other SERP).

Some of the things it will look for:

  • How trustworthy the link/ website is. This is a key factor, and is determined by
